Dealer-to-Dealer Car Shipping: What You Need To Know

Posted on 04/09/2025

In the fast-paced world of automotive retail, efficient vehicle logistics can make all the difference between thriving and merely surviving. Dealer-to-dealer car shipping services have become an essential component of modern dealership operations, allowing businesses to access inventory from across the country, balance stock between locations, and meet customer demands with greater flexibility.

At RoadRunner Auto Transport, we understand that your success depends on reliable, timely, and cost-effective vehicle transportation. Whether you’re moving a single high-value vehicle or redistributing multiple units across your dealer network, having a dependable auto transport partner is essential to your business operations.

Understanding Auto Transport Services for Dealerships

Car dealerships are increasingly relying on car transport services to maintain competitive inventory levels and meet consumer demands. Modern dealers tap into nationwide networks of other dealerships, auctions, and distribution centers to secure the right inventory mix. This shift has made dealer-to-dealer car shipping an integral part of successful dealership operations.

Dealer-to-Dealer Car Transport

Dealer-to-dealer car transport involves the direct movement of vehicles between two automotive retailers, whether they’re part of the same dealership group or separate businesses. This specialized service enables dealerships to share inventory, fulfill customer orders for specific models, and optimize their vehicle mix across multiple locations.

Successful dealer-to-dealer shipping depends on reliable scheduling, proper vehicle preparation, and accurate documentation to ensure smooth handoffs at both ends of the journey. With RoadRunner’s dedicated dealership services, we provide a single point of contact to coordinate all aspects of the transport, including pickup timing, delivery expectations, and any special handling requirements for high-value or specialty vehicles.

Auto Auction Car Transport

Auto auctions are another critical source of inventory for dealerships nationwide. From major auction houses to specialized events featuring luxury or classic vehicles, these venues provide dealers with access to thousands of vehicles that may not be available in their local markets. After purchasing vehicles at auction, dealers need reliable transport services to bring these acquisitions to their lots quickly and safely.

Auto auction transport presents unique challenges, including tight pickup windows, strict documentation requirements, and often the need for expedited shipping to get vehicles retail-ready as quickly as possible. RoadRunner’s auction transport specialists understand these pressures and work closely with both auction houses and dealerships to ensure seamless transportation. Our nationwide carrier network allows us to provide responsive service from all major auction locations, with priority scheduling to minimize the time between purchase and arrival at your dealership.

Types of Vehicle Transport Methods

When shipping vehicles between dealerships, you have two primary transport methods to choose from: open and enclosed carriers. Each offers distinct advantages depending on your specific needs and the types of vehicles being transported.

Open car transport is the most common and cost-effective option for dealer-to-dealer shipping. These carriers are perfect for standard inventory transfers of multiple new and used vehicles. The open design allows for efficient loading and unloading, which translates to faster pickup and delivery times.

Enclosed auto transport provides superior protection for high-value, luxury, exotic, or classic vehicles. These specialized carriers shield vehicles from all weather conditions, road debris, and public view during transit. While enclosed car transport costs more than open shipping, the added protection is well worth the investment for vehicles where the preservation of pristine condition is paramount.

Single Vehicle vs. Multi-Car Transport Options

Dealerships have varying transportation needs depending on their inventory strategy and business model. Some situations call for moving a single vehicle quickly, while others involve relocating multiple units to balance inventory across locations.

Single vehicle transport offers maximum flexibility and is ideal for time-sensitive situations like fulfilling a customer’s special order or moving a high-value vehicle that requires specialized attention. These shipments can be arranged on shorter notice and typically follow more direct routes to their destination, resulting in faster delivery times. Single-car transport is particularly valuable for urgent dealer trades or when moving specialized inventory like limited-edition models or custom-ordered vehicles.

Multi-car transport provides significant cost advantages when moving several vehicles at once. By consolidating multiple vehicles on a single carrier, dealerships can reduce their per-unit shipping costs considerably. This option is perfect for dealership groups redistributing inventory between locations or when receiving multiple purchases from distant auctions.

Door-to-Door vs. Terminal-to-Terminal Services

RoadRunner offers both door-to-door and terminal-to-terminal car shipping to accommodate different dealership needs.

Door-to-door service represents the gold standard in convenience for dealerships. Our auto carriers will pick up vehicles directly from the originating location and deliver them straight to the destination dealership. This approach minimizes handling and streamlines the entire process, with dealership staff only needing to be present at scheduled times for vehicle release and acceptance. Door-to-door service eliminates the need for dealership personnel to transport vehicles to distant terminals, saving valuable time.

Terminal-to-terminal service provides an alternative that can offer cost savings in certain situations. With this approach, vehicles are dropped off at a secure terminal facility near the origin point and then picked up from a terminal near the destination. This option can work well for dealerships located near major transport hubs or for situations where flexible pickup and delivery timing is advantageous. While requiring more involvement from dealership staff, terminal service sometimes offers more scheduling flexibility and can reduce costs for less time-sensitive shipments.

Benefits of Car Shipping for Dealerships

Professional auto transport services offer many advantages for dealerships looking to optimize their operations and inventory management. A strategic partnership with reliable auto transport companies like RoadRunner can transform your approach to inventory acquisition and management.

The benefits of auto transport services include:

  • Expanded inventory access beyond local markets
  • Ability to fulfill customer requests for specific makes, models, and trims
  • Reduced operational costs compared to using dealership personnel for vehicle transfers
  • Minimized vehicle wear, tear, and mileage that would occur during driving transfers
  • Professional insurance coverage throughout the transport process
  • Streamlined logistics with dedicated support and shipment tracking
  • More efficient reallocation of inventory across multiple locations
  • Ability to quickly respond to market demands and seasonal trends
  • Reduced liability and risk associated with employee driving
  • Professional handling by trained auto transport specialists
  • Simplified paperwork and documentation processes

The Vehicle Transport Process for Dealers

Understanding the complete vehicle transport process helps dealerships prepare properly and ensures smooth, efficient shipping experiences. RoadRunner has refined this process to minimize disruption to your operations while maximizing transportation efficiency.

Pre-Transport Vehicle Inspection Requirements

A thorough pre-transport inspection is essential for dealer-to-dealer shipping. This process establishes a documented baseline of the vehicle’s condition and protects all parties involved. A complete inspection should cover exterior conditions, existing damage, mechanical issues, and fuel levels.

During inspection, document all existing cosmetic issues with photos from multiple angles. Verify the vehicle has no mechanical problems that could complicate loading or unloading. Maintain fuel at approximately one-quarter tank — sufficient for necessary movement without adding excessive weight.

RoadRunner’s carriers conduct this inspection at pickup, recording all details on the Bill of Lading (BOL). We recommend auto dealership representatives be present during the inspection to verify the noted conditions and receive a BOL copy. This documentation ensures transparency and provides clear evidence of the vehicle’s pre-transport condition.

Documentation and Insurance Coverage

Proper documentation streamlines dealer-to-dealer shipping. The Bill of Lading serves as a receipt, contract of carriage, and condition report. Dealerships should also prepare vehicle title copies or MSOs for new vehicles, though these typically remain at the dealership.

Insurance is crucial for dealer-to-dealer transport. RoadRunner maintains comprehensive cargo insurance protecting vehicles during loading, transit, and unloading. We can provide insurance certificates upon request for verification of coverage limits and terms.

Estimated Delivery Timeframes and Tracking

Accurate delivery estimates are vital for dealership inventory planning. RoadRunner provides realistic transit times based on distance, route, and current conditions.

Our real-time tracking system gives dealerships complete visibility throughout the transport journey. Staff can monitor vehicle progress 24/7 through our online portal, enabling better planning for vehicle preparation, marketing, and customer communication — especially valuable for complex inventory movements.

Our dedicated support team complements this technology with regular updates and responsive service for any questions during transit. This combination of technology and personalized support ensures dealerships always know their vehicles’ location and expected arrival time.

Choosing the Right Auto Transport Company

Selecting the right transportation partner is one of the most critical decisions for establishing an effective dealer-to-dealer shipping program. The car shipping company you choose will directly impact your ability to move inventory efficiently, maintain vehicle conditions, and ultimately satisfy your customers.

Required Licenses and Certifications

When selecting an auto transport company, verify they have proper federal credentials. Look for an active USDOT number registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), confirming they meet safety and insurance requirements. For brokers, an MC number and broker authority are essential legal credentials.

RoadRunner maintains all required federal licensing and FMCSA compliance, ensuring proper handling of dealer shipments. Beyond basic credentials, choose a partner with specific dealer-to-dealer transport experience. Inquire about their familiarity with dealer processes, auction protocols, and handling requirements for your vehicle types. With more than three decades in dealer shipping, RoadRunner understands automotive retailers’ unique needs.

Cost Considerations and Pricing Factors

Transportation costs significantly impact dealer inventory planning. Key factors affecting auto transport rates include distance (longer routes require more resources), vehicle size and weight (larger vehicles occupy more carrier space), and transport type (enclosed transport costs more than open transport).

Route popularity also influences pricing, with major city routes offering more competitive rates than rural destinations. Seasonal variations create higher demand and rates during summer months and from January to February. Expedited shipping guarantees faster service at premium prices.

RoadRunner offers transparent, competitive pricing without hidden fees. Our dealer specialists can identify cost-effective options for your specific needs. We also provide volume pricing programs for auto dealerships with regular shipping requirements, enabling predictable long-term planning.

Customer Reviews and Industry Reputation

A transport company’s reputation among other dealerships provides valuable insight into their reliability. Research customer reviews from similar automotive retailers, as industry feedback often reveals more than general consumer reviews. Consider a company’s history and longevity in dealer transport, which can demonstrate stability and expertise through changing market conditions.

We encourage requesting references from other automotive retailers who can speak directly to their experiences. RoadRunner maintains strong relationships with dealerships nationwide and gladly provides references from satisfied clients in your market segment.

The mileage between the origin and destination is the biggest factor that contributes to your total rate. In addition to the distance of your relocation, another factor is the type and condition of the vehicle being shipped. The final factor is the date that your vehicle will be ready for transport. The driver will get the car transporter as close to your door as he can legally and safely get. In most cases, the driver will be able to pickup and deliver directly to your door. Some cities may have restrictions on large trucks that prohibit them from driving into residential areas. Auto transport trucks are large and need lots of room to maneuver and turn around, so if access to the pickup or delivery location is restricted by narrow streets, low-hanging trees or tight turns, the driver may ask that you meet at a location nearby with a large parking lot, such as a grocery store.

Open transport is the most common car shipping method. There are two types of open-air transporters. The Majority of shipments are be made with 8-10 car carriers. Smaller carriers which hold 2-3 cars are used for shorter, local car moving. There is a broader network of carrier availability for open-air carriers since they are used more often. We suggest choosing enclosed car shipping methods when shipping classic, luxury or exotic vehicles. Enclosed vehicle transportation guarantees maximum protection from exposure to any open-air elements on the road. We suggest booking your enclosed transport in advance since carrier availability is limited. Read more about the difference between open and enclosed transport

RoadRunner Auto Transport specializes in shipping all types of vehicles including sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, minivans, oversized vehicles, antiques, classic cars, motorcycles, construction vehicles, inoperable cars and boats. If you are not sure whether or not we can ship your vehicle, you can give us a call to find out what we can do for you.

You should have about a quarter of a tank of gas in your car at the time of shipment. This leaves enough for the car to be loaded and unloaded but doesn't add much additional weight.

The Bill of Lading is a very important document used by car shipping companies that documents any pre-existing damage on the vehicle during the time of pickup. It also serves as a record of your contact info and the official agreement for transport. If you want to file any insurance claim regarding your shipment you will need the Bill of Lading.

Top load service is when your car is placed on the higher deck or level of an open auto transport trailer. This is considered to be preferable to the bottom load because the cars on the lower deck are at risk of possibly having fluid from the cars above leak on them.

Make sure your car has been completely cleaned, both inside and outside. This is particularly important because this will help the driver conduct their inspection in order to assess any pre-existing damage on your vehicle. You will also want to make there are no additional personal items in the vehicle unless you intend to ship those with the vehicle (remember those items must total less than 100 pounds combined and be kept below the window-line of the vehicle). Be sure to inform the driver of any special circumstances concerning the vehicle. Finally, make sure there is a quarter tank of gas in the car at the time it is picked up for shipment. Visit our car shipping checklist to make sure you are prepared for your vehicle shipment.

Yes, we can ship vehicles that are in non-running/inoperable condition. When inoperable cars are shipped, a special auto carrier is required that makes use of a winch which is connected to your car and slowly and safely pulls your vehicle onto the carrier. There is an additional fee for inoperable vehicles because of the special equipment and extra work involved with securing the vehicle onto the transporter. You can select the inoperable option on the online booking form or inform your shipping agent if you make your reservation by phone so that the proper arrangements can be made to accommodate a non-running vehicle.

We offer open car shipping and enclosed transport services services. Open car shipping is used much more frequently and is the type of auto transport that you see on the highway where carriers are hauling vehicles on two decks that are exposed. Enclosed transport services are when your vehicle is shipped in a trailer which has walls and a roof, they look like a larger version of a regular eighteen-wheeler. This method is recommended for luxury, exotic or classic cars.

Door-to-door car transport is the full-service delivery of your vehicle directly from the door at the pickup location to the door at the delivery location. Our drivers do their best to get as close as physically and legally possible to the pickup and delivery locations, but in certain instances there may be restrictions preventing them from being able to reach your door safely. Our transporters need ample space to maneuver and load/unload your vehicle. If your street is too narrow, or if there are hazards such as low-lining trees or power lines, drivers may ask that you meet them at a location nearby where they can safely load or unload your vehicle, such as a large parking lot or shopping center nearby.
