Avoiding Car Shipping Scams: Protection Tips for Safe Vehicle Transport

Posted on 03/12/2025

Moving your vehicle across the country requires careful planning and choosing the right auto transport company. While most vehicle transport services operate with integrity, the industry has seen its share of scams targeting unsuspecting customers. Researching how to identify and avoid car shipping mistakes helps protect both your vehicle and your wallet during the transport process.

Recognizing Common Auto Transport Scams

Before entrusting your vehicle to any shipping or car transport company, it’s important to recognize the tactics that dishonest operators use to take advantage of customers. By familiarizing yourself with common car shipping scams, you can better protect yourself when arranging for vehicle transport. Here are the most prevalent types of car shipping scams and how to identify them:

Unrealistic Pricing Offers

One of the most prevalent car shipping scams involves quotes that seem too good to be true. Dishonest auto transport brokers may advertise exceptionally low rates to attract customers, only to add substantial hidden fees later or even disappear with your deposit. Legitimate car shipping costs are based on factors including distance, vehicle size, transport type, and seasonal demand. When a quote falls significantly below market rates, this often signals potential problems.

Auto transport companies with transparent pricing will provide detailed breakdowns of all costs involved and explain the factors affecting your rate. They should clearly communicate any potential additional charges and provide an online quote calculator that outlines all services included. Remember that exceptionally low quotes often lead to service quality issues, delays, or additional charges that ultimately make the total cost much higher than initially advertised.

Demands for Complete Payment Upfront

Another common tactic in car shipping scams is requesting full payment before providing any services. When a company demands payment upfront, particularly through non-traceable payment methods like wire transfers or cryptocurrency, this raises significant concerns about its legitimacy:

  • Reputable companies typically require only a small deposit, with the remaining balance due upon delivery
  • Verify that the company offers secure, traceable payment options like credit cards or electronic checks
  • Check payment timing policies before booking your shipment
  • Never send cash or use wire transfers to unknown or unverified shipping companies
  • Request a written payment schedule as part of your service agreement
  • Be wary of companies that claim to offer discounts for complete upfront payment

Trustworthy auto transport services acknowledge the importance of building customer trust and will never pressure you to complete payment before pickup. These options provide protection in case of disputes and help establish a reliable shipping experience.

Fabricated Credentials and Reviews

Some unscrupulous operators create fake online identities with falsified credentials and manufactured customer reviews. Scam companies may claim long-standing industry experience while actually operating for just a few months. They might display logos from industry organizations they don’t belong to or post fabricated customer testimonials to appear legitimate.

Real auto transport brokers maintain verifiable business records, proper licensing, and authentic customer feedback across multiple platforms. They belong to industry associations and have established business addresses and telephone numbers you can verify. When researching potential transport services, look for consistency in company information across different platforms and be wary of businesses with only positive reviews or testimonials that seem generic or repetitive.

Identifying Warning Signs of Fraudulent Transport Services

Learning to spot the red flags associated with car shipping scams can save you considerable time, money, and stress. Legitimate auto transport companies operate with transparency and professionalism at every stage of the process. Review these following warning signs should prompt further investigation before proceeding with any vehicle transport arrangement:

Missing or Unverifiable Licensing Information

Every legitimate auto transport company operating across state lines must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and obtain a Department of Transportation (DOT) number. This registration provides oversight and accountability within the industry. When a company cannot or will not provide valid DOT information, this represents a significant red flag that requires immediate attention.

Verifying a company’s DOT number takes just a few minutes through the FMCSA website and provides valuable information about its safety record and operating authority. Companies operating without proper licensing may lack insurance coverage for your vehicle and operate outside regulatory oversight. Always confirm that any transport service you consider has current, valid registration and maintains appropriate insurance coverage for your vehicle during transit.

High-Pressure Sales Tactics

Reputable auto transport services respect your need to research options and make informed decisions. In contrast, scam operations often employ aggressive sales techniques designed to rush you into making quick decisions without proper consideration:

  • Watch for claims about limited-time offers that expire unusually quickly
  • Be cautious of warnings about rapidly increasing prices if you don’t book immediately
  • Question repeated statements about diminishing carrier availability
  • Avoid companies that insist on immediate booking without allowing research time
  • Be skeptical of representatives who create artificial urgency in the booking process
  • Trust your instincts if you feel uncomfortable with the sales approach

Legitimate car transport companies realize that vehicle shipping represents a significant commitment and will provide the time and information you need to make confident decisions. Professional services focus on education rather than pressure, verifying you have all the facts needed to choose the right shipping option for your needs.

Limited Online Presence and Poor Communication

The digital footprint of an auto transport company often reveals important clues about its legitimacy. Established, reputable services maintain professional websites with comprehensive information about their operations, clear contact details, and transparent policies. They typically have a consistent presence across business directories and social media platforms, with identifiable company representatives.

Watch for companies with minimal online information, recently created websites, or inconsistent business details across different platforms. Limited or outdated contact information can signal potential problems, as can representatives who seem unwilling to answer specific questions about their services. Professional auto transport services prioritize clear communication throughout the shipping process and remain accessible to address any concerns that arise.

Protection Strategies When Arranging Vehicle Transport

Taking proactive steps to verify auto transport companies and document your vehicle’s condition provides essential protection against potential scams. Practical transport measures help verify your vehicle receives proper care throughout the shipping process and give you recourse if problems occur:

Thorough Research and Verification Processes

Investing time in researching potential auto transport services helps identify reliable, professional companies with proven track records. Begin by gathering quotes from multiple providers to establish a baseline for reasonable pricing in your specific situation. This comparison helps identify outliers that may signal potential scams through prices that are either suspiciously low or unusually high.

Check each company’s reputation through the Better Business Bureau and transportation industry associations. Look for consistent patterns in customer reviews across multiple platforms, paying attention to how companies respond to negative feedback. Verify their DOT number through the FMCSA website and confirm their insurance coverage before proceeding. This thorough approach to research helps identify trustworthy auto transport companies with a demonstrated commitment to customer satisfaction.

Complete Documentation Throughout the Process

Thorough documentation protects your interests throughout the shipping process and provides essential evidence if disputes arise. These images should capture all exterior surfaces, including the roof, undercarriage, and interior components, as appropriate:

  • Take detailed photographs documenting your vehicle’s condition before shipment
  • Complete an extensive inspection report with the carrier representative
  • Ensure all existing damage is properly noted before transport begins
  • Get signatures from both parties on the condition report
  • Upon delivery, inspect the vehicle thoroughly while the driver is present
  • Document any changes or new damage that may have occurred
  • Compare delivery conditions against your pre-transport documentation
  • Maintain copies of all paperwork until the transport is successfully completed

Work with your transport company to provide proper documentation at every stage of the shipping process. This meticulous approach creates a clear record of your vehicle’s journey and provides valuable protection if any issues need resolution.

Understanding Coverage and Legal Protections

Before shipping your vehicle, carefully review all contract terms and insurance coverage to understand your rights and responsibilities. Legitimate auto transport services provide a complete breakdown of insurance coverage and claims processes. They clearly explain liability limitations and any additional protection options available for your shipment.

Federal regulations require all auto transport companies to carry cargo insurance, but coverage levels and claim procedures vary between providers. Ask specific questions about insurance limits, deductibles, and the process for filing claims if damage occurs. Reviewing the legal details before shipping begins helps you make informed decisions about additional coverage and prepares you to act quickly if problems arise during transport.

The mileage between the origin and destination is the biggest factor that contributes to your total rate. In addition to the distance of your relocation, another factor is the type and condition of the vehicle being shipped. The final factor is the date that your vehicle will be ready for transport. There are also additional options, such as enclosed carrier and top-load service that can be added to your shipment at the time of booking for a higher level of service. The driver will get the car transporter as close to your door as he can legally and safely get. In most cases, the driver will be able to pickup and deliver directly to your door. Some cities may have restrictions on large trucks that prohibit them from driving into residential areas. Auto transport trucks are large and need lots of room to maneuver and turn around, so if access to the pickup or delivery location is restricted by narrow streets, low-hanging trees or tight turns, the driver may ask that you meet at a location nearby with a large parking lot, such as a grocery store.

Open transport is the most common car shipping method. There are two types of open-air transporters. The Majority of shipments are be made with 8-10 car carriers. Smaller carriers which hold 2-3 cars are used for shorter, local car moving. There is a broader network of carrier availability for open-air carriers since they are used more often. We suggest choosing enclosed car shipping methods when shipping classic, luxury or exotic vehicles. Enclosed vehicle transportation guarantees maximum protection from exposure to any open-air elements on the road. We suggest booking your enclosed transport in advance since carrier availability is limited. Read more about the difference between open and enclosed transport

RoadRunner Auto Transport specializes in shipping all types of vehicles including sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, minivans, oversized vehicles, antiques, classic cars, motorcycles, construction vehicles, inoperable cars and boats. If you are not sure whether or not we can ship your vehicle, you can give us a call to find out what we can do for you.

You should have about a quarter of a tank of gas in your car at the time of shipment. This leaves enough for the car to be loaded and unloaded but doesn't add much additional weight.

The Bill of Lading is a very important document used by car shipping companies that documents any pre-existing damage on the vehicle during the time of pickup. It also serves as a record of your contact info and the official agreement for transport. If you want to file any insurance claim regarding your shipment you will need the Bill of Lading.

Top load service is when your car is placed on the higher deck or level of an open auto transport trailer. This is considered to be preferable to the bottom load because the cars on the lower deck are at risk of possibly having fluid from the cars above leak on them.

Make sure your car has been completely cleaned, both inside and outside. This is particularly important because this will help the driver conduct their inspection in order to assess any pre-existing damage on your vehicle. You will also want to make there are no additional personal items in the vehicle unless you intend to ship those with the vehicle (remember those items must total less than 100 pounds combined and be kept below the window-line of the vehicle). Be sure to inform the driver of any special circumstances concerning the vehicle. Finally, make sure there is a quarter tank of gas in the car at the time it is picked up for shipment. Visit our car shipping checklist to make sure you are prepared for your vehicle shipment.

Yes, we can ship vehicles that are in non-running/inoperable condition. When inoperable cars are shipped, a special auto carrier is required that makes use of a winch which is connected to your car and slowly and safely pulls your vehicle onto the carrier. There is an additional fee for inoperable vehicles because of the special equipment and extra work involved with securing the vehicle onto the transporter. You can select the inoperable option on the online booking form or inform your shipping agent if you make your reservation by phone so that the proper arrangements can be made to accommodate a non-running vehicle.

We offer open car shipping and enclosed transport services services. Open car shipping is used much more frequently and is the type of auto transport that you see on the highway where carriers are hauling vehicles on two decks that are exposed. Enclosed transport services are when your vehicle is shipped in a trailer which has walls and a roof, they look like a larger version of a regular eighteen-wheeler. This method is recommended for luxury, exotic or classic cars.

Door-to-door car transport is the full-service delivery of your vehicle directly from the door at the pickup location to the door at the delivery location. Our drivers do their best to get as close as physically and legally possible to the pickup and delivery locations, but in certain instances there may be restrictions preventing them from being able to reach your door safely. Our transporters need ample space to maneuver and load/unload your vehicle. If your street is too narrow, or if there are hazards such as low-lining trees or power lines, drivers may ask that you meet them at a location nearby where they can safely load or unload your vehicle, such as a large parking lot or shopping center nearby.
