How to Ship a Car to Another State

Posted on 07/01/2024

Relocating to a new state is an exciting chapter, but it also comes with the challenge of transporting your vehicle safely and efficiently. Shipping a car across state lines requires careful planning and execution to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience. Whether you’re moving across the country for a new job, to be closer to family, or simply for a change of scenery, a reputable car shipping company can help ship your car to another state with ease.

State-to-State Car Shipping Methods

When it comes to shipping a car to another state, car shipping companies with professional experience offer two main options: open and enclosed carriers. Understanding the differences between these methods can help you make an informed decision based on your needs and budget.

Open Carriers

Open carriers are the more economical option for car shipping. Your vehicle will be transported on a multi-car open trailer, exposed to the elements during transit. While cost-effective, the open trailer method leaves your car vulnerable to potential road debris, weather conditions, and minor scratches or dents.

Enclosed Carriers

Enclosed carriers offer maximum protection for your vehicle during shipping. Your car will be transported by a car shipping company with professional experience in an enclosed trailer, shielded from external factors like road debris, rain, snow, and other environmental hazards. While more expensive than open carriers, this method is ideal for classic, luxury, or high-end vehicles that require extra care during transportation.

Seasonal residents often become experts at how to ship a car to another state, using snow bird shipping services to transport their vehicles between summer and winter homes.

Pickup and Delivery Options for State-to-State Car Shipping

You’ll typically have two choices for pickup and delivery with a car shipping companies with professional experience: door-to-door or terminal-to-terminal service:

  1. Door-to-Door Service – Door-to-door service is the most convenient option, as the carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle directly at your specified locations. However, this service is more expensive and may not be available in all areas.
  2. Terminal-to-Terminal Service – With terminal-to-terminal service, you’ll need to drop off and pick up your car at designated terminals or locations near your origin and destination. This option is more cost-effective but requires additional coordination and transportation to and from the terminals.

Business owners relocating their operations can efficiently move commercial vehicles and equipment to a new state using specialized truck shipping services.

Tips for a Stress-Free Car Pickup and Delivery Process

The pickup and delivery process is an important part of shipping your car to another state. Proper preparation and communication with your car moving company can help you achieve a smooth and stress-free experience.

Keep these tips in mind:

  • Confirm Pickup and Delivery Details – Double-check the scheduled dates, times, and locations with your transport company.
  • Be Prepared for Inspections – Have your vehicle ready for the pre-shipping inspection and be present for the final inspection upon delivery.
  • Provide Clear Access – Ensure the pickup and delivery locations have clear access for the transport carrier.
  • Document Everything – Take photos and notes of your vehicle’s condition before and after shipping to avoid disputes.

Preparing Your Vehicle for Shipping

Proper preparation makes sure your vehicle arrives at its destination in the same condition as when it was picked up. Follow these steps to get your car ready for shipping:

  • Exterior and Interior Cleaning – Give your vehicle a thorough wash and cleaning, both inside and out. This will make it easier to document any existing dents, scratches, or other damages before shipping, which can help avoid disputes upon delivery.
  • Documentation and Photography – Take detailed photographs and notes of your vehicle’s current condition, including any pre-existing damages or wear and tear. This documentation will serve as evidence if any issues arise during transport.
  • Remove Personal Items – Remove all personal belongings, including GPS devices, toll passes, and any valuable or sentimental items from your vehicle. These items can potentially get lost or damaged during shipping, and most auto transport companies do not cover their loss or theft.
  • Check Fluids and Battery – Ensure your vehicle has sufficient fuel (no more than a quarter tank) and that the battery is in good condition. This will allow for easy loading and unloading during transport.
  • Disable Alarms and Devices – Turn off any alarms, toll tags, or other devices that may drain the battery during transport. Additionally, disengage any parking brakes or other systems that could cause issues during loading and unloading.

Tracking Your Shipment and Delivery

Once your vehicle is on its way, staying informed about its progress is helpful for peace of mind and proper planning for its arrival.

Shipment Tracking

  • Most reputable auto transport companies provide online tracking portals or regular updates via email, phone, or text messages.
  • These tracking services allow you to monitor your vehicle’s location and estimated delivery date in real-time.

Communication with the Transport Company

  • Don’t hesitate to contact the transport company’s customer support team if you have any questions or concerns during the shipping process.
  • A reliable company should have knowledgeable staff available to address your inquiries promptly.

Delivery Inspection and Documentation

  • When your vehicle arrives at its destination, conducting a thorough inspection for any potential damages or issues is best practice.
  • Check the exterior and interior, test all functions, and document any problems with photographs and notes.
  • Report any issues immediately to the transport company for proper resolution.

Choosing the Right Auto Transport Company

With numerous auto transport companies to choose from, it’s best to do your research and select a reputable and reliable service provider.

Consider these factors before selecting your auto transport company:

Licensing and Insurance

  • The company you choose must be properly licensed and insured. Look for companies registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and verify their Motor Carrier (MC) number.
  • Inquire about their insurance coverage, including liability and cargo insurance, to protect your vehicle during transport.

Experience and Reputation

  • Research the company’s years of experience in the auto transport industry and read customer reviews on independent platforms like the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Trustpilot.
  • Companies with a long-standing track record and positive reviews are generally more reliable and experienced in handling various transport scenarios.

Pricing and Transparency

  • Request quotes from multiple companies and compare not only the pricing but also the services included and any additional fees or charges.
  • Be wary of companies offering unusually low prices, as this may be a red flag for hidden costs or subpar service.

Communication and Customer Support

  • Evaluate the company’s communication channels and customer support offerings.
  • A reputable auto transport company should provide regular updates on your vehicle’s status, as well as responsive and knowledgeable support staff to address any questions or concerns you may have throughout the shipping process.

Cost Factors of State-to-State Car Shipping

Shipping a car to another state in the United States can be a significant expense, and it’s smart to understand the various cost factors involved. By being aware of these factors, you can make informed decisions and potentially save money on your auto transport needs with a car moving company.

The primary cost factors to consider are:

  • Distance – The greater the distance between your origin and destination, the higher the shipping cost.
  • Vehicle Type and Size – Larger vehicles like trucks or SUVs typically cost more to ship than smaller cars.
  • Transport Method – Closed trailers offer better protection but are more expensive than open trailers.
  • Delivery Options – Door-to-door service is convenient but costlier than terminal-to-terminal transport.
  • Timing – Shipping during peak moving seasons or requiring expedited service can increase costs.

By understanding these cost factors, you can better compare quotes from different auto transport moving companies and choose the option that best fits your budget and requirements.

Car Shipping Cost Calculators for State-to-State Car Shipping

When planning to ship your car to another state, getting an accurate cost estimate is a must. Many car shipping companies provide a valuable tool called a car shipping cost calculator to help with this process.

A car shipping cost calculator takes into account various factors to estimate the total cost of shipping your vehicle, including:

Transport Distance – The mileage between the origin and destination is the most significant factor in determining your total rate.

Vehicle Type – The type of vehicle being shipped will determine how much space is required on the transporter.

Shipment Date – The date of your desired relocation will determine the amount of available truck space at that time.

Inoperable Car Shipping to Another State

You may need to ship a non-running or inoperable vehicle to another state. This scenario presents unique challenges and requires additional precautions from auto transport moving companies.

Here are some details to consider when shipping an inoperable vehicle:

  • Special Equipment – Inoperable vehicles may require specialized equipment like hydraulic lift gates or ramps for loading and unloading.
  • Proper Securement – Extra care must be taken to ensure the vehicle is properly secured and immobilized during transport.
  • Additional Fees – Transport companies may charge additional fees for handling inoperable vehicles due to the extra effort required.

While shipping an inoperable vehicle can be more complex, reputable auto transport companies have the experience and equipment to handle these situations safely and efficiently.

Shipping a Classic, Luxury or Exotic Car to Another State

are factors to keep in mind when planning your shipment.

Be aware of these challenges when shipping your car to another state during winter:

  • Weather Delay – Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures can cause road closures and transit delays, potentially extending your shipment timeline.
  • Route Planning – Transport companies may need to adjust routes and plans to avoid severe winter weather conditions.
  • Vehicle Preparation – Ensure your vehicle is properly winterized, with appropriate antifreeze levels and working defrosters/heaters.
  • Open vs. Enclosed Carriers – Enclosed carriers offer better protection from winter elements like snow, ice, and road salt.

Being prepared and working with an experienced auto transport company minimizes the potential challenges and provides a smoother winter shipping experience.

Car Shipping Insurance Across State Lines

When shipping your car to another state, adequate insurance coverage protects your valuable asset during transit. Most reputable auto transport companies offer various insurance options, but understanding the details is beneficial.

Here are important insurance considerations for car shipping across state lines:

Open transport is the most common car shipping method. There are two types of open-air transporters. The Majority of shipments are be made with 8-10 car carriers. Smaller carriers which hold 2-3 cars are used for shorter, local car moving. There is a broader network of carrier availability for open-air carriers since they are used more often. We suggest choosing enclosed car shipping methods when shipping classic, luxury or exotic vehicles. Yes, we can ship vehicles that are in non-running/inoperable condition. When inoperable cars are shipped, a special auto carrier is required that makes use of a winch which is connected to your car and slowly and safely pulls your vehicle onto the carrier. There is an additional fee for inoperable vehicles because of the special equipment and extra work involved with securing the vehicle onto the transporter. You can select the inoperable option on the online booking form or inform your shipping agent if you make your reservation by phone so that the proper arrangements can be made to accommodate a non-running vehicle.

Enclosed car shipping is when your vehicle is shipped in a trailer which has walls and a roof, they look like a larger version of a regular eighteen-wheeler. This method is recommended for luxury, exotic or classic cars.

Door-to-door car transport is the full-service delivery of your vehicle directly from the door at the pickup location to the door at the delivery location. Our drivers do their best to get as close as physically and legally possible to the pickup and delivery locations, but in certain instances there may be restrictions preventing them from being able to reach your door safely. Our transporters need ample space to maneuver and load/unload your vehicle. If your street is too narrow, or if there are hazards such as low-lining trees or power lines, drivers may ask that you meet them at a location nearby where they can safely load or unload your vehicle, such as a large parking lot or shopping center nearby.
